There is great pride this week as Mohill Basketball Club celebrates an achievement for some of its underage players. Three of the club’s young basketball stars, Sarah Prunty, Katie Phelan and Lucy McGuinness, have been officially selected for the Basketball Ireland Under-14 Academy following a rigorous talent identification process.
The journey to national recognition was no small feat. The young athletes had to attend two intense rounds of talent identification trials up in Ballyshannon, competing against top-tier prospects from across the Northwest region (spanning Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, and North Roscommon). Standing out among dozens of hopefuls is a testament to the hard work, resilience, and high standard these players have set for themselves within the Mohill Club.
A Milestone for the Young Mavericks
The selection highlights the rapid development happening at the Mohill Community and Sports Hub, where the club has cultivated a thriving environment for youth sports. For a community club deeply rooted in the region, seeing local talent transition onto the national pathway is an immense source of pride.
Coaches, club members, and families have rallied behind the trio, whose dedication to training sessions, skill-building drills, and team play has finally paid off on a national scale.
What’s Next for the Young Stars?
The Basketball Ireland Academies serve as the crucial first step on the national high-performance player pathway. Designed to "widen the net" for players with potential, the academy will expose our three Mavericks to elite coaching, and new game concepts, alongside peers from across the region.
As they prepare for the upcoming regional sessions, the entire club and local community wish them the absolute best of luck. This is only the beginning of their basketball journey, and Mohill Basketball Club will be cheering them on every step of the way! 🏀
